Resort employee pleads guilty to killing a man at a North Shore holiday party

A resort employee admitted to killing a man at a holiday party in 2015.

The man accused of killing a 35-year-old Bloomington man at a holiday party in 2015 has pleaded guilty.

Friday, Cook County officials said Kirk Lee Bigby, 62, had admitted to shooting Marcus Roberts at Bluefin Bay Resort in Tofte – which is along the North Shore.

The Finland, Minnesota, man has no other criminal history, so he could face up to 15 years in prison.

"With this resolution to the case against Kirk Bigby, the defendant has taken responsibility for the loss and pain he has caused and will be punished for his actions,” County Attorney Molly Hicken said in a statement.

Bigby has been in custody of the Cook County sheriff and held at the Lake County Jail. After his sentencing, he'll be moved to the Department of Corrections and likely be detained at a state-run prison for the rest of his sentence.

What happened?

The incident happened in Dec. 2015 at Bluefin Bay Resort.

Authorities initially said Roberts had been working for a gaming company the resort hired for the party. Bigby was one of the resort's employees.

Then towards the end of the night, the two men got into an altercation. It ended with Bigby pulling out a handgun and fatally shooting Roberts.

The murder shook the town of 226 people.

“We have never had a shooting or any violent crime in Tofte in my 32 years here at Bluefin Bay,” resort owner Dennis Rysdahl told the Star Tribune after the incident. “We love our small, safe community and it is so hard for us to understand how this could happen.

As the Pioneer Press reports, Bigby initially said he acted in self-defense.
