Foodies rejoice! More unique restaurant plans have been announced for the Twin Cities.

Here's a look.

Another restaurant to open in the North Loop

Shag, a 1970s-style sushi restaurant, is expected to open in Minneapolis' North Loop by the end of the year, reports say.

Michael McDermott, a Phoenix restaurateur who founded the steak-and-sushi chain Kona Grill before moving to Minnesota to focus on other restaurant concepts – Rojo Mexican Grill and Ling & Louie's Kitchen (which will open on Nicollet Mall in a few weeks) – is planning yet another restaurant venture in the Twin Cities.

McDermott announced Tuesday he signed a lease for a 3,000-square-foot space on Washington Avenue to open Shag, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

The restaurant will have a Las Vegas-style vibe, the Eater notes, and is expected to open by the end of the year.

McDermott says the North Loop has a "great restaurant environment," so when the space became available, he started thinking of ideas for a possible restaurant to go there, adding "I felt there was a void for a real hip sushi bar. We think it fits the demographic over there, which are 20- and 30-year-olds," according to the Business Journal.

Neighborhood-funded eatery

A farm-to-table eatery has found a home along the light rail in South Minneapolis – now it just needs investors.

Kacey White and Charles Stotts are just a couple thousand dollars away from opening their dream restaurant, the Locavore Eatery, at Oaks Station Place along the Blue Line – the restaurant will be the first retail tenant in the development, which opened in 2012.

White and Stotts, with the help of a group of south Minneapolis entrepreneurs who recently launched the fundraising website, Hoodstarter, are turning to neighbors to crowdfund the restaurant, according to the Hoodstarter fundraising campaign.

“We live in the neighborhood. We use the light rail system all the time,” White said, according to Finance-Commerce. "[The location] couldn't be more ideal."

The restaurant's proximity to the light rail is expected to attract walk-in customers from the neighborhood, as well as become a destination for people who use the nearby transit hub, Finance-Commerce notes.

Lacavore hopes to raise $40,000 to close a financing gap and secure a larger loan – and as an incentive to get donations, its offering perks, which include unlimited wine for life, the Hoodstarter campaign says. As of Wednesday afternoon, the project had raised $500.

Lacavore is the first project to be crowdfunded by Hoodstarter, Finance-Commerce says. Pending final financing, construction of the restaurant is expected to take eight to 12 weeks, the publication notes.
