Restaurant on Minneapolis' oldest street closes after 18 months in business

Just under 18 months after opening, the Mattie's on Main bar and restaurant in Minneapolis has closed down.

In a message to patrons on its Facebook and

">Twitter accounts, owners Tom McGree and Dean Schlaak said "we were not able to stay in business" and that its doors were closed as of Sunday.

The venue, on St. Anthony Main by the Mississippi River, opened in May of 2014, with the two owners trying out a new restaurant concept next door to their other eatery, "The Wilde Roast Cafe," The Journal reports.

The full name of the bar, "Mattie St. Clair's House of Spirits on Main Street," was named after 1800s madam and brothel owner Mattie St. Clair, who operated near the site on St. Anthony Main, according to its website.

Styled as a "modern-day saloon" with live entertainment and music, it was known for its distinctive "Drag Brunch" on the second and fourth Sunday of every month, with a rotating cast of drag queens performing for diners.

Its closure was met with disappointment on Facebook, with Emily McGrath among the commenters, saying: "Sorry to see this. I was really rooting for this restaurant. Such a great menu and enjoyed the events."

Minnesota LGBT website The Column notes that Mattie's has been a friend to the LGBT during the time it was open, hosting countless artists and featuring blues, jazz and Pride events.

Prior to Mattie's opening, the unit was home to Kikugawa sushi restaurant, The Journal notes.

Although restaurants on Minneapolis's "oldest street" have a prime location on the east bank of the Mississippi, 2015 has proved a difficult trading year for some of them.

The closure of Mattie's comes after the abrupt shutdown of Pracna On Main – considered Minneapolis's oldest bar – in January.

The owner, John Rimarcik, said in April that the closure was temporary as he intended to embark on an upgrade featuring a bigger kitchen, refreshed menu, and new equipment, but it is still to reopen.

A more recent report from The Pioneer Press in May said that the intention was for the bar to reopen in June, with a new Italian Steakhouse restaurant due to open late this fall.
