Retail roundup: Chain stores that are coming and going in the metro

The end of the work week brings a flurry of news about retail openings and closings.

The Business Journal reports that Kohl's has closed its store at the former Brookdale Center in Brooklyn Center. Kohl's is directing customers to its new Plymouth outlet that opened last Friday in a space previously occupied by Rainbow Foods, which closed earlier this winter.

While Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based Kohl's described the move as a store relocation, the Business Journal story notes that the Brooklyn Center and Plymouth sites are located in separate trade areas that are roughly 15 minutes apart.

The Business Journal also has a story that says the Hobby Lobby chain is close to a finalizing a deal to open an arts and crafts store in Blaine, in the Northtown Mall. The space in question is a 54,200-square-foot space in the northwest corner of the center that would be visible from County Road 10.

There are Hobby Lobby stores in Mankato and Rochester. The chain opened its first metro store last month in Woodbury, and is moving ahead with plans to open in Maplewood.

On Tuesday, Radio Shack announced that it would close as many as 1,100 of its outlets nationally; Daily Finance said the move is related to slumping sales for what it called the "small-box chain." Also this week, Bloomberg covered the announcement from the Staples office supply chain, which said that it would close 225 of its outlets in North America and shift the business online.

Both retailers have outlets in Minnesota, but an announcement about the specific stores that will be shuttered has not yet been made by either chain.
