A road worker who was hit by a driver in Scott County on Monday has died.

His niece Maria Hawkins confirmed to Bring Me The News 59-year-old Ricardo Perez died Thursday of his injuries, saying her uncle was very funny, outgoing and smart.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office reported the crash happened at noon Monday near the intersection of Marschall Road and 170th Street East in Spring Lake Township, west of Prior Lake.

An 84-year-old New Prague man was driving northbound on Marschall Road when he hit Perez, who was directing traffic in a work zone, the sheriff's office said. Perez was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center.

The sheriff's office identified Perez on Friday, confirming his death.

Hawkins said her uncle is "proudly" from Crystal City, Texas, and was doing construction work in Minnesota amid the COVID-19 pandemic. She noted this was his first time doing road construction as he typically did building construction.

"He was a very smart man. He could hold a conversation with you on just about any topic," she said.

Perez is survived by his 91-year-old father, two sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews, Hawkins said, noting he has family in Texas, Minnesota and North Dakota.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol continue to investigate the crash.
