Robots help bomb squad destroy 'suspicious device' near NW Minnesota school

The suspicious device, taped to a utility pole, caused a stir in Detroit Lakes on Thursday morning – but that may have been the point of whoever put it there.

At about 8:23 a.m., police were alerted to the presence of the object, which had a "cellular phone taped to it and wires apparently connecting the phone to the package," according to a news release. The discovery in People's Park prompted authorities to call in the Red River Valley bomb squad.

“Whoever left (the item) definitely wanted us to think it was a bomb,” Detroit Lakes Police Chief Tim Eggebraaten told the Forum News Service.

However, it was eventually found not to contain any explosive materials at all, according to a Facebook update from Detroit Lakes Police.

Nonetheless, the incident triggered a "Code Yellow" at nearby Rossman Elementary, which cleared students off its playgrounds as authorities investigated the suspicious device.

It was ultimately a pair of robots that ended the scare, police said in the release. The bomb squad used them to "view the object from a close distance and shot the device with a projectile from one of the robots" at around 12:45 p.m.

Since then, things are getting back to normal at Rossman Elementary, which has lifted its Code Yellow:

Authorities are still investigating the incident, and asking anyone who might have seen something suspicious in the park to contact them.
