A police officer in Rochester who was under criminal investigation died from a gunshot wound believed to have been self-inflicted.

KIMT reports 49-year-old Mitchell Jenson was found in Essex Park on Wednesday with a gunshot wound to the head, with authorities treating his death as an apparent suicide.

Olmsted County Sheriff's Office told the TV station Jenson was placed on administrative leave a day earlier, relating to allegations of his involvement while off-duty in a crime that was being investigated.

WQOQ reports Jenson, a five-year veteran of the Rochester Police Department and a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps., was found in the park's pavilion at around 10:25 a.m.

"This is certainly one of our worst days," Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson told the station. "We feel like we've lost a member of our family because we have lost a member of our family."

The Associated Press reports the criminal investigation – which started on Tuesday following a complaint from a citizen – will continue despite Jenson's death as there are "allegations that need to be resolved." What exactly is being investigated hasn't been revealed.
