Heavy rain in southeast Minnesota Thursday morning caused flash flooding in Rochester, stranding motorists on their way to work.

KTTC says cars were spotted floating in high water near 19th Street NW and Valleyhigh Drive around 7 a.m.

Some drivers were trapped inside their cars in headlight-deep water and numerous other vehicles were stalled, blocking streets and creating traffic jams, the Rochester Post Bulletin reported.

The television station says more than 2 inches of rain fell in downtown Rochester sending water through the lobby of Mayo Clinic's Charlton Building. More than 3 inches were reported in Byron, about 10 miles west of Rochester.

Wind gusts as strong as 50 mph caused some tree branches to fall on power lines, but no major damage was reported.
