Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak has two new gigs lined up for his post-mayor days.

Rybak is set to be named the new executive director of Generation Next, a nonprofit organization focused on closing the educational achievement gap in schools, he told the Star Tribune editorial board during a meeting on Wednesday.

“Our biggest challenge is also our greatest opportunity,” Rybak told the newspaper board.

Rybak had been a member of the group's leadership council board.

Generation Next on its website says it "is committed to closing the achievement gap among Twin Cities’ low-income students and students of color." The group says it aims to bring community, government and business partners together to accelerate achievement for all children, from early childhood through early career.

Next spring, Rybak will also teach a course at the University of Minnesota called "Mayor 101," which explores the political, administrative, design and bureaucratic challenges of running a major U.S. city.

After 12 years in the mayor's office, Rybak's third term ends in January.

Voters will choose his replacement in a Tuesday election.
