Savage police officer injured by suspected drunk driver

The officer suffered injuries not considered life-threatening.

A police officer from Savage Police Department was injured when his squad car was hit by a suspected drunk driver on the side of the road.

According to Savage PD, the incident happened around 11:51 p.m. Monday at Hwy. 13 and Dakota Avenue. Officer Alex Casey was stopped on the side of the road assisting a motorist whose vehicle had stalled.

The department says Casey parked his squad car behind the stalled vehicle, which is standard procedure, when a car traveling east on Hwy. 13 hit the left rear side of his vehicle.

Fortunately, Casey was wearing his seat belt and was able to keep his car away from the people in the stalled vehicle.

The Minnesota State Patrol arrested the driver who caused the crash on suspicion of driving while impaired and criminal vehicular operation. Formal charges have not yet been filed.

In Minnesota, it's law to move over one full lane for a stopped emergency vehicle, and if it's not safe to move over, drivers are expected to slow down.
