Say goodbye to the arctic air: Temperatures will gradually get warmer this weekend

It's really cold today, but it's going to get warmer. We promise.

It's going to get warmer.

We're almost through the worst of this blast of arctic air. Temperatures in central Minnesota dipped to minus-20 degrees in a few locations overnight, the National Weather Service says, and dangerously cold wind chills of minus-25 to minus-35 are expected to continue through mid-morning.

But there's some good news: Temperatures will gradually warm up through the weekend. Hallelujah.

It won't be warm by any means – the forecast still shows the possibility of minus-30 wind chills – but by Sunday afternoon, temperatures are expected to rise into the double-digits above zero. It's not much, but that'll feel noticeably warmer than it did Friday morning.

That "warming" trend will continue to start the work week. The National Weather Service says it'll be more mild, with highs reaching the teens and 20s for much of Minnesota on Monday and Tuesday.

Looking ahead to next week, the Climate Prediction Center's temperature outlook for Jan. 11-15 shows a good chance of temperatures being slightly below-average, but the outlook for Jan. 13-19 shows temperatures will be "normal" for that the of year.

Average temps for the Twin Cities and Duluth in mid-January is in the low 20s, according to AccuWeather, while northwestern Minnesota typically sees temperatres in the upper teens.
