Aaron Schaffhausen was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for killing his three young daughters at their River Falls, Wisc. home last July.

St. Croix County Circuit Judge Howard Cameron read the sentence to a packed courtroom Monday with Schaffhausen's ex-wife, Jessica Schaffhausen, in the front row.

Schaffhausen remained emotionless during witness statements from the girls' relatives, including Jessica Schaffhausen's sister, Mary Elizabeth Stotz, who repeatedly described Schaffhausen as "evil."

Schaffhausen's parents, Roger Schaffhausen and Sue Allen, gave statements in their son's defense.

Schaffhausen, 35, pleaded guilty to the murders of 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia, but claimed he was insane at the time.

After a two-week insanity trial this spring, a jury determined Schaffhausen had a mental disease or defect, but it did not absolve him of responsibility for the crimes, the Pioneer Press reported.

The Star Tribune talked with experts about what's in store for Schaffhausen in the Wisconsin jail system.
