The mother of a 6-year-old boy in northern Minnesota said he arrived home with "frozen tears" after walking about a quarter of a mile home in sub-zero temperatures because his bus driver decided to give the boy a cold hike as a punishment, the Bemidji Pioneer reports.

The incident in Wilton, Minn., just outside Bemidji, happened Feb. 20, one of the coldest days of the winter, the Pioneer reports. The boy, Darrion, who has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, was wearing a coat but didn’t have mittens or boots that day, the newspaper reports.

The driver, frustrated that the boy was not following directions, dropped the boy's 8-year-old brother off at home, but then physically prevented the 6-year-old from following his sibling off the bus. The driver drove the boy down the road a bit before letting him get off the bus, the Pioneer reported.

The probationary driver resigned after the Bemidji school district started to investigate, Superintendent Jim Hess said.

The boy's parents want more answers and want to see the bus surveillance video of the incident, the Pioneer reported.
