SD mommy blogger weathers backlash over bully comments

A South Dakota mother who typically blogs for an audience of a few family and friends got an instant taste of fame in the digital age after she wrote that bullied kids should toughen up.

Stephanie Metz shared a link to the blog post on her The Metz Family blog on Facebook, and it quickly went viral, the Associated Press reports.

Metz's rambling Oct. 25 post – which she acknowledges is "a bit all over the place" – was as much about whether parents should let "boys be boys" as it was about children and the hot-button issue of bullying.

But it got a lot of attention – hundreds of thousands of clicks, the AP reported.

"I feel like kids are being raised to constantly be victims, they don't know how to problem solve, they don't know how to deal with adversity when bad things happen to them," Metz said in an interview on the national morning show "Fox and Friends." "I just think it's going to create a big problem when they have to go out into the real world and deal with those things."

The post was initially inspired by her son's choice not to take a toy action figure, which is holding what looks like a drill or ray gun, to day care for show-and-tell because he didn't want to get in trouble for a gun. Her post spun into a treatise on oversensitive parents, among other topics.

"The main message is 'don't be afraid to parent your kids.' They need to deal with some hardships," the 29-year-old mother of two young boys told the Associated Press.

Metz said she got the most backlash from people who responded to what she wrote about bullying. She wrote, "How long will it be before their typical boy-ish behavior gets them suspended from school? How long before they get suspended from daycare??? How long will it be before one of them gets upset with a friend, tells that friend to go away and leave them alone, and subsequently gets labeled as a bully?"

“Understand I am not condoning kids to be cruel to each other, but I think kids need to toughen up when kids are not nice to them,” Metz told ABC News.
