A second woman has died from her injuries resulting from an alleged wrench attack by her brother earlier in July.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that Eleanor Ekers, 31, died on July 22 from complications of blunt force head injuries, two weeks after she was the victim of an attack in her family's Maple Grove home.
Her brother, 34-year-old David Ekers, has been charged with the murder of his grandmother, Darlene J. Broste, 86, of Worthington, with paramedics declaring the grandmother dead at the scene.
Ekers' mother, 63-year-old Linda, was also critically injured in the assault. There is no update as to her condition.
The criminal complaint against Ekers says he has mental health issues, and he told officers he wanted to kill his family members "because he did not want to be on medication or go back to the hospital."
"The defendant stated that his mother had thought something was wrong the day before and wanted him to go to the hospital."
He says he didn't attack his father – who called 911 – because he saw him "as an ally."
No announcement on additional charges have yet been made.
