Semi driver hit and killed by train in west-central Minnesota

It happened in Raymond off of Hwy. 23.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the man killed in the collision with a train is 79-year-old Daniel Schmidt.

The train involved was being operated by Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

The driver of a semi pulling a trailer filled with sugar beets was killed Monday when his rig was struck by a train in west-central Minnesota. 

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office says the semi vs. train crash happened at approximately 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of Kandi-Chippewa Line Southeast and Hwy. 23 in Raymond, which is 13 miles southwest of Willmar. 

Deputies responded and found the 79-year-old man driving the semi dead at the scene. The semi and trailer was traveling south when it was struck by the train. 

The identity of the semi driver will be released at a later date.
