Senate chair pulls Mayo bill off agenda

Noting that the Mayo Clinic's proposal for $585 million in state aid didn't involve the Minnesota Legislature "as much as it should have," Senate Taxes Committee Chairman Rod Skoe pulled the Mayo bill off his agenda Friday, the Star Tribune reports.

The delay comes as lawmakers try to rework the request with Mayo officials for state money, which they want for improvements to infrastructure in Rochester.

Currently, the House and Senate are working on changes in the bill's financing and structure. The House sponsor's "Plan B" version of the bill will go back to the House Taxes Committee next week.

Skoe said Friday all parties are needed at the table to work forward so there's more of a consensus around the next proposal, the Star Tribune reports.

The money the Mayo seeks is part of $6 billion, 20-year plan for its "Destination Medical Center"-- an initiative to transform Rochester into a city with a world-class medical center.

The initial proposal, announced in January, called for the Mayo Clinic to invest $3.5 billion to expand its Rochester campus over the next two decades, with another $2 billion in private investment and $585 million from the state for infrastructure costs.

Referencing the state's reluctance to move forward with the bill, Mayo CEO Dr. John Noseworthy said earlier this week that 49 states would be happy to have Mayo's investment.

Noseworthy warned that without the support from the state, it may have to expand its Florida and Arizona campuses instead.
