Minnesota has a new top federal prosecutor.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Andrew Luger Wednesday as the U.S. Attorney for the district of Minnesota, the Associated Press reports.

Luger was nominated for the post last summer by Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken. He succeeds Todd Jones, who is now in Washington leading the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Jones' nomination for that post languished on Capitol Hill for two years, during which he served both as Minnesota's U.S. Attorney and as interim head of ATF.

The Star Tribune says Klobuchar urged her colleagues to speed Luger's confirmation by pointing out that it had been 880 days since Minnesota last had a full-time U.S. Attorney.

Minnesota Lawyer reports Luger was confirmed on a voice vote without opposition. The journal says in Minnesota legal circles Luger was commended for his work leading a 2009 investigation of the Metro Gang Strike Force. After being appointed by the commissioner of public safety, Luger documented a series of problems with the strike force and recommended it be disbanded, which it was.

Minnesota Lawyer also notes he co-chaired a review of law enforcement officers' treatment of protesters during the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

Luger has been with the Greene Espel law firm since 1996, specializing in defending white-collar criminal cases, the firm says. He previously prosecuted white-collar crimes as an assistant in U.S. Attorney's offices in Minnesota and New York.
