Fires at two different locations in Minneapolis caused extensive damage to several businesses and sent two people to the hospital late Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Downtown apartment building

A fire broke out in a downtown apartment building at 8th Street and Portland Avenue shortly before noon Sunday, according to KSTP. Smoke and flames could be seen coming from windows on the building’s third floor.

The five-story building has 40 apartments, and firefighters went through and knocked on every door to make sure all the tenants evacuated safely, WCCO reports.

Crews were able to put out the fire, but the layout of the building made it more difficult, according to WCCO.

One resident was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with unknown injuries. A firefighter was hospitalized with a back injury, WCCO says. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church at 1509 NE 27th Avenue in Minneapolis to house about 50 residents of the apartment building who were displaced by the fire.

North Minneapolis businesses damaged

The other fire Saturday night caused extensive damage to several businesses in north Minneapolis, and at least three of the buildings are a total loss, fire officials said.

The blaze broke out in the basement of a building near Lowry and Fremont Avenues North shortly before 10 p.m., and quickly spread to several adjoining buildings, the Star Tribune reports.

Several of those buildings were severely damaged, as walls, floors and roofs collapsed, according to a statement from Assistant Fire Chief CharlesBrynteson.

“At least three of the affected buildings will be a total loss," he said.

According to WCCO, the building where the fire started housed a cellphone store and a beauty salon.

No one was in the buildings when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
