Shakopee student files lawsuit after athletics suspension over tweet

A 16-year-old Shakopee High School student, who was suspended in August from school athletics after district officials said he sent a tweet that amounted to a terroristic threat, is suing the district, the Star Tribune reports.

Tyson Leon, a junior, said the suspension is hurting his chances of getting to college on a wrestling scholarship, the newspaper reports. Leon, who also plays football, says the tweet he sent – “Im boutta drill my ‘teammates’ on Monday.” – was merely a reference to football, and he had no intent of hurting anyone.

School officials have signaled that they might be willing to let him back on the mat, and a settlement conference has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Leon had been suspended from sports on three prior occasions, for arguing with a teacher, for fighting with a peer and for "chemical use" at a party, the Star Tribune reports.

It's not unusual for students to sue their schools. Last year, a Minneswaska middle school student in west-central Minnesota sued her school district over a search of her Facebook and e-mail accounts by school employees.

And a black student in Red Wing sued the school district in 2011 over a non-sanctioned homecoming event that she said was racist. She had alleged that about 70 students participated in what was known as "Wednesday Wigger Day" or "Wangsta Day" in which white students dressed to mock African-Americans. The district ultimately settled for $90,000.
