Firefighters battled a massive blaze that engulfed a hay shed at a dairy farm in southern Minnesota Friday evening.

Nicollet County Sheriff's Office said around 70 firefighters from Nicollet, St. Peter, Courtland, Lafayette, North Mankato and Gaylord Fire Departments fought the fire at the New Sweden Dairy just off County Road 15, west of St. Peter.

They were called to reports of a structure fire at 8:18 p.m. and arrived to find a hay shed engulfed in flames.

The fire had also spread to an attached maintenance shop.

Despite the assistance of ambulance crews, sheriff's deputies and two farmers who helped haul water to the scene, the shed was completely destroyed by the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

New Sweden Dairy is owned by Davis Family Dairies, according to its website, and is also home to the Dairy Education Center, affiliated with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.

Between its three dairies and one ranch, the company manages more than 20,000 cows and calves, with 7,500 more born each year, which produce about 60,000 gallons of milk a day which in turn leads to a daily production of 70,000 pounds of cheese.
