Sheriff: 1 dead, 1 hospitalized after shooting in central Minnesota

It may have been a drug deal gone bad, according to a release.

A homicide investigation is happening in central Minnesota after two people were shot near Long Prairie. 

The shooting was evident when a deputy with the Todd County Sheriff's Office stopped a motorist near Hwy. 71 and Riverside Dr., with the deputy finding the driver and passenger suffering from gunshot wounds. 

The passenger was declared dead at the scene and the driver was transported to Long Prairie Hospital for care, where their current condition is unknown. Neither victim has been identified. 

According to a release from the sheriff's office, the victims were in Long Prairie "to complete a drug transaction," though full details of what may have led to the shooting haven't been announced by authorities. 

The sheriff's office said the victims and suspects know each other. 

Anyone who may have seen vehicles or people in the area of County Road 38 and County Road 11 between 9-9:30 p.m. Saturday is urged to call the Todd County Sheriff's Office at 1-800-794-5733.
