A man was killed in northern Minnesota Sunday when his ATV hit a washout in a ditch, launching him into the air.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Spencer Sande, suffered "substantial injuroes" in the crash reported at 5:42 p.m. in St. Louis County.

Traveling along Rossini Road, near Pequaywan Lake Road northwest of Two Harbors, Sande hit a washout in a ditch, which launched him and his ATV into the air before causing the vehicle to roll over.

Sande was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and his injuries were so severe that he was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.

The St. Louis County Sheriff says that alcohol and speed "both appear to be factors in the crash," which continues to be under investigation.
