The St. Louis County sheriff's office is investigating a report of a man impersonating a deputy sheriff and trying to lure a woman into his car, several news outlets are reporting Sunday.

Authorities say that at about 3 a.m. Saturday, the man pulled up to the broken-down car of a young woman at the intersection of county highways 4 and 16, about 10 miles south of Biwabik and Aurora in Colvin Township, on the Mesabi Iron Range, reports the Duluth News Tribune via the Pioneer Press.

According to police, the man is said to have been wearing a St. Louis County Sheriff's Office uniform and was driving a late 1980s Pontiac Trans Am without a front license plate and with red and blue lights mounted alongside the grille, according to KARE 11.

Police say the woman became suspicious of the man and was able to drive away.

A similar incident was reported in January just a few miles away, on County Highway 4 about five miles south of Biwabik, according to the St. Paul paper. In that case, two men in an unmarked car with dash-mounted emergency lights pulled over a female driver at night. The woman became suspicious and drove off without being pursued further.

Officials said Saturday that they do not believe the two cases are connected.
