A man who stopped to help another motorist that crashed into a ditch was assaulted, then his was car stolen, the Wright County Sheriff's Office says.

The suspect led officials on a short chase before he crashed into a utility pole.

Brent Morris, 31, told officials he had stopped to help a driver whose white Chevy Impala had gone into a ditch in the area of Highway 55 and County Road 35 in Buffalo early Thursday morning. When he approached the driver, he was assaulted and the driver fled in his pickup truck, the sheriff's office says.

A Wright County Sheriff's deputy had attempted to pull over a vehicle with the same description for speeding around 2 a.m. Thursday – not long before officials received the call from Morris.

Sheriff's deputies eventually caught up to the stolen truck, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, and pursued it for a short time before the driver lost control and crashed into a power pole, according to the release.

The driver then fled on foot, and sheriff's deputies and a K-9 eventually located the driver – a 27-year-old man from St. Joseph – near Calder Avenue northeast and arrested him for fleeing, robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and driving after revocation.

He was transported to Buffalo Allina Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. He'll be booked into the Wright County Jail upon his release.

The suspect has not been charged.
