Sheriff promises tighter security at Schaffhausen trial after witness arrested

The St. Croix County sherrif vows tighter security at Aaron Schaffhausen's trial after an arrest in the courthouse on Friday, reportedly of one of the witnesses.

A press release from Sheriff John Shilts does not specify who was arrested when deputies responded to "a potential threat" Friday morning.

But the Eau Claire Leader Telegram identifies the man as one of the witnesses who testified at Schaffhausen's insanity trial Friday. The newspaper reports Schaffhausen's friend and former co-worker is being held pending charges that could include battery, threatening a witness, possessing a switchblade, and disorderly conduct.

Schaffhausen has pleaded guilty to murdering his three daughters last summer in the River Falls home where the girls lived with their mother, his ex-wife. Jurors are listening to testimony about Schaffhausen's state of mind and will determine if he should be sentenced to a mental hospital or to prison.
