Sheriff: Teen dies after being found in marsh, synthetic drugs may be involved

A teenager reported missing by his father died two days after being found in a marsh, and authorities say synthetic drugs may have been involved in his death.

The Carver County Sheriff's Office said in a news release the teen's father called authorities around 7 p.m. Sunday to report his son missing.

According to the sheriff's office:

Using a tracking app on the boy's cellphone, the father told authorities he appeared to be in Lake Minnewashta Regional Park in Chanhassen, where the teen's shoes and phone were discovered.

The first deputy on the scene began searching and located the teen face up in a cattail marsh, 3-4 inches deep. He was having a "medical event resembling a seizure."

The teen was brought to shore, administered first aid and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

He died two days later.

The teen was identified Wednesday as Alexander Snyder of Chanhassen. The sheriff's office says Snyder was a donor, and doctors recovered organs and tissue for eight transplant recipients.

Investigators spoke with one of the teenager's friends, a 17-year-old, who told them he and Snyder had taken a "synthetic psychedelic drug" right before Snyder disappeared. He said the drug was purchased over the Internet and delivered from China, then told investigators he was also feeling ill, according to the release.

He was taken to a hospital in Chaska and later released, the sheriff's office says.

The Carver County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Earlier this year the New York Times reported that makers and providers of synthetic drugs are flourishing in China, and companies are selling those substances to people around the world.
