Sheriff: Teenager accidentally shot by family member near Brainerd

Authorities in central Minnesota are investigating after a teenager what shot by a family member. 

The shooting, which the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office believes to have been an accident, happened around 12 p.m. Saturday at a residence on the 11000 block of Bonnie Road in First Assessment Township. 

The victim, a 17-year-old boy, was accidentally shot by a family member who was handling a handgun. The teen was transported to Essentia Health and then taken to St. Cloud Hospital for multiple surgeries. 

The teenager's current condition is unknown. 

"The investigation at the scene appears to support an accidental discharge by another family member while handling the firearm," the sheriff's office said. 

The incident happened about five miles north of Brainerd.
