Sheriff: WI woman missed a curve, went into river night she disappeared

The Wisconsin woman whose body was found in a submerged van days after she went missing appears to have missed a curve and gone straight into the water.

Marya Christiansen, a 23-year-old from Hager City Wisconsin, disappeared after leaving her friend's house in Red Wing early Saturday, following a night out on the town. She left alone to drive home, friends said, but her boyfriend called authorities that afternoon and said she never made it.

On Wednesday, search teams pulled the van she was driving from the Mississippi River, finding Christiansen's body inside, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office said.

The early findings show Christiansen missed a "sweeping curve," then traveled through grass and into the river, Pierce County Sheriff Nancy Hove confirmed to BringMeTheNews.

Hove said they also found some small scrapes on the rocks that point toward what happened.

Hove added it might be a couple of weeks before medical examiner results come back that may explain the manner or cause of death.

Christiansen has two children, 3 and 6 years old, according to a Facebook page dedicated to her memory.

A memorial fund was also set up through GoFundMe, hoping to raise $8,000 to help pay for the funeral and leave some money for her children.
