Authorities say a young woman's body was found in a farm field near Alexandria, in the area where officials have been searching for a teenager who's been missing for nearly two weeks.

Douglas County Sheriff Troy Wolbersen said in a statement that a farmer discovered the remains Monday afternoon while he was harvesting in his fields. Deputies confirmed the body appeared to be that of a woman in her late teens to early 20s.

Investigators and volunteers have been searching for 18-year-old Laura Schwendemann ever since she went missing the evening of Oct. 14.

Schwendemann was last seen at a gas station in Alexandria that night, and authorities say she drove off with a male acquaintance.

The man she was seen with has been interviewed by authorities, and Wolbersen said earlier Monday “he continues to be a person that we are interested in and are investigating," the Forum News Service reports.

Authorities have been searching for Schwendemann on the ground and by air, primarily in southern Douglas County and northern Pope County, WCCO reports.

Hundreds of family and friends attended a vigil for Schwendemann in her hometown Sunday night, nearly two weeks after she disappeared.

And as word spread of the discovery of the body Monday evening, messages of condolence were being posted on a Facebook page dedicated to Schwendemann.

The body was taken to the Midwest Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy and positive identification, the sheriff said. He added that the investigation into Schwendemann's disappearance is still active.
