A sheriff's deputy has pleaded guilty to beating his police dog partner at the Black Bear Casino in Carlton County back in June.
The Pioneer Press reports Ramsey County Deputy Brett Berry, 48, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, with a second charge of assaulting a public safety dog dropped as part of a plea agreement.
He has been placed on administrative leave and then assigned to the department's detention division, the newspaper reports, with his sentencing set for Feb. 17.
Berry was at the casino and resort to attend K-9 Officer certification trials, and surveillance footage showed him hitting his partner, Boone, after slamming him to the ground.
Earlier that night, Berry had been asked to leave the casino's Cobalt Lounge and was seen on camera carrying his dog to the car while "visibly upset."
According to KARE 11, Berry, of Arden Hills, admitted to being "blackout drunk" when he hit the dog on the night in question.
Boone was removed from his care and assigned a new partner.
