A 14-year-old Minnesota girl is dead after authorities say she was "swept away" by currents on the St. Croix River this weekend.

Taw Meh, of St. Paul, was boating on Sunday afternoon with a sibling and some friends south of Interstate Park, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office in Polk County, Wisconsin.

They had stopped on a sandbar, the sheriff's office says, but while Meh was in the water strong currents swept her away.

A 911 call at 3:21 p.m. prompted a search for the missing girl, whose body was recovered by a dive team about two hours later.

According to FOX 9 Meh had "stepped off" the sandbar, with witnesses saying they saw her disappear under the water.

No other details about the incident were immediately available.

Recent canoe incidents

Last week, a Rochester teen and his two friends had a harrowing experience in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area when their boat was caught in rapids, sending the three plunging 25 to 30 feet over a waterfall.

Two of the paddlers were able to swim to safety, but 16-year-old Asher Bloom was trapped in the rapids for several hours after his foot was caught in the heavily damaged canoe.

Luckily, after his friends raised help, he was rescued and is recovering after a bout of advanced hypothermia.

In April, one man died and two others had to be rescued after their canoe overturned on Twin Lake in Ramsey County.

One of the survivors told reporters the party didn't have life jackets aboard their boat.
