A violent incident along the Wisconsin-Minnesota border this weekend leaves a mother and son dead.

According to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office, authorities responded to a call of a "violent domestic dispute" at a home in Hudson around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. A 28-year-old man had stabbed his mother to death and beat a sibling with a stick while the rest of the family hid in a garage on the property.

When deputies arrived, they found the mother dead – the suspect had fled the scene in a White Pontiac Grand Am, the news release says.

As deputies headed to the suspect's apartment around 12:45 a.m., they got a call from a neighbor who said it was on fire.

The man's car was spotted about a half hour later on Hwy. 12 in Woodville, where an officer started following without the emergency lights activated as he waited for backup. Authorities say that's when the man shot out of his vehicle in the direction of the Woodville officer.

From there, it turned into a pursuit that covered over 50 miles through St. Croix and Polk Counties in Wisconsin, the sheriff's office said. Authorities used tire deflation devices to try to stop the suspect, who continued to fire multiple rounds at law enforcement.

It finally ended across the Minnesota border on Hwy. 8 in Chisago County, when the man crashed into a median barrier. He continued to fire shots after the crash, before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities say the subject was found dead in the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head.

The sheriff's office says this is a "very complex case," and no other information is being released at this time.

"Our hearts go out to the family in this case. I would also like to thank the various agencies who assisted and continue to assist my office with this investigation," St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts said in the release.
