What's happening?

Shipt, the online market place and delivery company that Target bought for $550 million in December, will launch same-day deliveries of Target goods in the Twin Cities on March 1.

Shoppers can use the Shipt website to pick from more than 55,000 items from Target's grocery, essentials, home, electronics and toy departments for same-day delivery across the Twin Cities metro.

Its delivery area covers 1.2 million households, according to a press release, with deliveries launching on March 1.

Shipt membership costs $99 a year (the same as Target's same-day delivery competitor Amazon), but you can get annual membership for $49 if you sign up before March 1.

Shipt is hiring thousands of workers

Shipt operates by employing personal shoppers who visit Target (and other) stores to pick out what you ordered, and delivery drivers to bring it to your door.

Customers are able to select a one-hour delivery window that suits their convenience.

To cope with the predicted demand, Shipt is going on a massive hiring spree, with the company saying the partnership with Target should create 4,000 new jobs locally.

It's a significant move from Target

Trying to stave off the inexorable rise of Amazon, Target took a big leap into same-day delivery with its purchase of Shipt in December, subsequently ending its partnership with previous same-day delivery company Instacart in the process.

It allows Target to get the jump on another major rival, Walmart, which does not yet offer same-day delivery.

"Same-day delivery was at the top of our list when we were thinking about ways to make shopping at Target even easier," said John Mulligan, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Target.

"Shipt’s personalized, customer-focused approach fits perfectly with our commitment to deliver a convenient, exceptional experience and we’re excited to begin offering same day service in our own backyard of the Twin Cities."

Minnesota is the first northern state to get Shipt/Target deliveries, with the other nine states offering it found in the south of the country, where the Alabama-based Shipt were already established.
