Shock, sadness over sudden deaths of two Minnesota police officers

They reportedly died by suicide.
Police officer deaths

The police community in Minnesota is in mourning after the sudden deaths of two officers.

South St. Paul PD Officer Cory Slifko and Rogers PD Officer Blake Neumann both died on Wednesday, with Backing the Blue Line saying both died from suicide.

Neumann, who was a K-9 officer who has served in Rogers since 2014, leaves behind a fiancée and two young children. He died "unexpectedly" while off-duty on Wednesday morning.

"Our police department family, and city staff, are mourning our tremendous loss, and will miss Blake greatly," the City of Rogers said on Twitter Thursday.

Slifko was confirmed dead on the same day, and is survived by his wife and two children. He was a 20-year veteran of the police department.

"Our entire police department family is in mourning and our hearts go out to his entire family," South St. Paul PD wrote on Facebook. "His presence within our department and our community as a whole will be sorely missed."

The South St. Paul Police Department shared a link to a post on The Officer Next Door, which explains how traumatizing the job of a police officer often is.

A study released in September found that police officers are at a higher risk of suicide than any other profession.

The rate of 13 out of 100,000 deaths by suicide in the general population rises to 17 out of 100,000 for police officers, with 167 police officers taking their own lives in 2018.
