Authorities in Cottage Grove say a gunman chased his wife through the parking lot of a strip mall before fatally shooting her and then turning the gun on himself Thursday.

The 22-year-old mother had expressed fear that her estranged husband would harm her, Police Chief Craig Woolery said Friday morning, the Star Tribune reports. She had filed for divorce, and also a protection order last year, although that order had been dismissed, the newspaper reports.

The Star Tribune identifies them as Chevel Richard, 22, and his wife, Tensia Richard. The couple had two children, 3 years old and 5 months old, the newspaper reports.

Investigators found a long, rambling note from the gunman that outlined financial and relationship problems, Fox 9 reports. Chevel Richard was charged with fifth-degree assault in June stemming from a domestic incident, Fox 9 says.

Witnesses told reporters they saw a woman run out of a nearby Anytime Fitness with a man chasing and shooting at her.

WCCO says police found the woman dead and her husband with a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a Jimmy John's sandwich shop. The man was transported to Regions Hospital, where he later died.
