A frightening shootout took place Sunday night near a picnic area at Minnehaha Park.

According to Minneapolis Park Police, the incident unfolded around 8 p.m. when a car drove into a parking lot near the Wabun Picnic Area and began firing at a group of people in the park. The group then opened return fire on the car, and both groups left the park in vehicles traveling at high rates of speed.

"At this time, we are not aware of any injuries and Park Police is checking with local hospitals to see if any victims transported themselves for treatment," Park Police said in a release.

A witness told KSTP that they were face-to-face with one of the gunmen, prompting them to run in the other direction.

As of 9 a.m. Monday there were not any known victims.

The case remains under investigation.

The Wabun Picnic Area is located adjacent to the Mississippi River and Hwy. 55/Hiawatha Avenue, or about two miles east of Lake Nokomis.
