Federal shutdown delays monthly state jobs report

Officials from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) release the state's monthly employment data on the third Thursday of each month. That would be today.

Twin Cities Business notes that the partial shutdown of the federal government is delaying the release of those statistics. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics provides data needed to compile the report. A spokeswoman with DEED told the publication that it's not clear when Minnesota’s September jobs report will be made public, but it will likely be a few weeks before it's available.

DEED anticipated the delay. Last week, the office told reporters that it would be unable to release the September data on schedule.

The report is closely watched as an indicator of the state's economic health.

Earlier, the Associated Press reported that the Labor Department did not release the national jobs report for September because there weren't enough staffers on site to compile it. That report is regarded as one of the most influential economic reports in the world and can affect global financial markets.
