Well, the prolonged fall we've been having couldn't last forever.

After a couple of appearances in the north of the state, the snow is making its presence felt across a larger area of Minnesota Thursday.

Small flakes have been falling in the Twin Cities, but it's been much heavier along the Interstate 94 corridor, with KARE 11 reporting residents in central Minnesota awoke to a blanket of white in the morning.

This, in turn, is causing problems for interstate drivers who have, as is customary for this time of year, forgotten how to handle the slippery conditions following a lengthy summer.

The Minnesota State Patrol says there have been several slide-outs and rollovers, while one state trooper received minor injuries after his patrol car was hit by a sliding semi trailer.

KSTP notes several crashes and collisions have also been reported in northwestern Minnesota, while

">the National Weather Service says scattered snow showers have been causing reduced visibility particularly between Alexandria and St. Cloud.

MPR reports that the northern reaches Minnesota on the Canadian border could get as much as 6 inches on Thursday.

Temperatures have dropped significantly across the state, with KSTP reporting it was 30 degrees in the Twin Cities in the morning, the coolest it's been since April 23 and down 27 degrees from Wednesday morning.

Making conditions more difficult is a driving wind, with a weather advisory in place until 4 p.m. for much of western, central and southern Minnesota with gusts of up to 50 mph.

The National Weather Service says the snow is likely again Friday, with parts of southern Minnesota near Interstate 90 potentially seeing between 2-3 inches.

Accuweather reports the southern portion of the state will be hit by a snowstorm that will sweep across the Midwest this weekend, affecting mainly Iowa, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Illinois.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office has released a brochure of winter driving tips, which you can download here. It says preparation is key, with drivers told to check their vehicle's fluids and wipers, and cleaning snow off their windows, lights and mirrors before setting off.
