There were harrowing moments for residents in Madison, Wisconsin, Friday morning – after a sizable sinkhole swallowed several cars outside an apartment building.

The situation unfolded at around 5 a.m. outside the River's Edge Apartments, the Wisconsin State Journal reports, when a broken water pipe caused the hole to open up.

Some 300 residents were evacuated from their apartments over gas leak concerns, while three vehicles were left partially submerged as they fell into the water-filled sinkhole, the paper says.

Channel 3000 reports fire crews were still draining the water from the hole at around 11 a.m.

Nobody was injured, but residents of the apartment complex won't be able to return to any of the four buildings at least through Friday night, according to the State Journal.

Manchester sinkhole

It wasn't the only sinkhole to make headlines on Friday.

In Manchester, England, nobody was hurt after a huge hole opened up on a main road – measuring 30 feet wide and up to 40 feet deep.

It is believed to have been caused by a collapsed sewer following torrential rain in the northern city, according to the Manchester Evening News.
