Slain officer case: Wife, ex-wife fight over memorial money

The wife of slain Cold Spring police officer Tom Decker and his ex-wife – the mother of his four children – are in a dispute over the money that has been donated in his memory, WCCO reports.

Tens of thousands of dollars have been donated, the station reports. Several events to raise money have been held, including a concert that aimed to raise $50,000 and a basketball tournament. But it's not clear where the money will go.

Recent court filings indicate Decker’s second wife and widow, Alicia Decker, wants an independent trustee to manage the accounts, but she’s asking for half the money, with the other half to go to her late husband's four children, WCCO reports.

But his ex-wife Becky Decker believes it would be fairer for the money to be divided evenly between all five parties (the children and Alicia Decker), WCCO reports.

A hearing is set for April 1.

Tom Decker, 31, was killed Nov. 29 when he responded to a call in Cold Spring, and thousands of mourners honored the fallen officer. A Cold Spring man police sought to question in the case killed himself in January, and the investigation is ongoing.

Earlier this month the department retired his badge number.
