Slushy and slick: Wintry mix making roads slippery; crashes reported

We've got a mixed bag of precipitation moving through Minnesota today. Get ready for a combination of rain, sleet, freezing rain and/or snow by this evening, which is making for slippery roads in parts of the state.

A low-pressure system in Canada is expected to produce an area of precipitation in the upper Midwest Sunday morning, gradually moving east across Minnesota through Monday morning, the National Weather Service says.

In the Twin Cities, an icy mix is possible through the afternoon. However, ice or snow accumulation is not expected.

That may be a different story north and west of the metro where a winter weather advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. (See map at left.) Locations such as Montevideo, Willmar, Hutchinson, St. Cloud, Morris and Brainerd may see some light ice accumulations due to freezing rain and sleet by this afternoon. Travel with care, but especially in the advised areas.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation's website showed at 9:20 a.m., many roads in west-central Minnesota were partially covered with ice, with some roads completely covered with ice.

For parts of northern Minnesota, the wintry mix is expected to change over to all snow by the mid afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulation isn't expected to total over an inch.

A big warm-up is expected this week, however. Some places of Minnesota have the chance to reach 50 degrees.
