Residents in Iron River, Wisconsin, a town of about 1,000 people roughly 40 miles southeast of Duluth, are reeling after an elderly couple was killed in a violent attack, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

The couple's 44-year-old son was found injured in the apartment where the bodies of the couple were found, and the son was arrested, the newspaper reports. He was being treated at Duluth hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, under guard by Bayfield County law enforcement officers, Northland's Newscenter reported.

Jim Crain, 79, and Eunice “Crickett” Crain, 76, were killed in a "gruesome" attack at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, their landlord said. The landlord described a bloody crime scene, although police have declined to describe exactly how the couple was killed.

"That's not something we see here in this small town; it was shocking," landlord Eric Olson told WDIO. Olson owns a nearby bar, where the Crains often went.

"(They were) two salt-of-the-earth people that were family-oriented and had a wonderful impact on our community," Olson told WDIO.

Investigators have not yet commented on a possible motive in the killings.

Jim Crain was disabled and on oxygen, a friend told the News Tribune. The Crains were described as a "sweet" couple, active in the Trails North ATV Club, which was planning a surprise birthday party for Jim on Friday. “Unfortunately, I think we will have a memorial instead," Jeanne Hultman, a member of the club, told the News Tribune.
