Multiple snowmobile accidents, injuries in Northern Minn.

Multiple snowmobile accidents in Northeastern Minnesota kept law enforcement officers busy Saturday.

The Duluth News Tribune reports a Virginia, Minn. snowmobiler crashed near Lake Vermilion. The man lost control rounding a corner while traveling the Arrowhead Trail, then went off the trail and struck several trees. Teddy Dean Lewis was transported with what the sheriff's office called non-life-threatening injuries.

Earlier in the day a Byron, Minn., man was injured on the North Shore State Trail. The Duluth News Tribune said the 46-year-old man was traveling with a group when he hit an icy corner and was thrown from his machine. He was transported for medical care.

And the paper reports a Hanover, Minn. husband and wife were injured when he rolled his machine, and she ran into him after inadvertently accelerating instead of braking. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said Martin and Jennifer Schumacher participated in a vintage snowmobile event on Fish Lake and were riding on a trail when Martin lost control of his borrowed snowmobile and rolled it. Jennifer, riding behind him, saw him lying on the trail as she approached, applied the throttle instead of the brake and crashed into him. Both were transported with non-life threatening injuries.

Earlier in the week, two Wisconsin men died when their snowmobile plunged into the icy waters of Lake Superior near Madeline Island on Wednesday night. WDIO reported one man was found just south of the island on the edge of open water. Rescue divers found a second rider dead in the water hours later.

The men were found by the island's south channel, unpredictable because the current causes thin ice and open water.
