Snowstorm dumping heavy snow on Twin Cities commute

Old Man Winter gets around. After a rare visit to the South this week, his Thursday plans apparently include hitching a ride into the Twin Cities with morning commuters.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from the Twin Cities into west central Wisconsin from 5 a.m. until noon.

The Weather Service says heavy snow will have a severe impact on the morning commute. Beginning at about 4 or 5 a.m., the snow is expected to begin falling at the rate of an inch or two per hour by 6 o'clock. Forecasters say it will taper off by mid-to-late morning but may leave 4 to 6 inches on the ground by then.

Because of its timing, KSTP meteorologist Dave Dahl gives this storm a "hassle factor" rating of 9. Yes, that's on a scale of 1 to 10.

Dahl says southern Minnesota and the southern end of the Twin Cities area may be in line for 4 or 5 inches of new snow, while the northern Twin Cities and central Minnesota could get 1 to 3 inches.

Needless to say, extra time is advised for commuters.

Twin Cities road conditions are available from the Transportation Department here.

As usual, the storm will be followed by colder air. The Weather Service says wind chills Thursday night and Friday morning could be in the 20 to 35 below range.

That would make it our coldest morning since .... never mind.
