Soccer player threatens coach, charged with felony assault

An 18 year old soccer player was charged with second-degree assault in Nicollet County District Court after he allegedly threatened his coach with a goal stake.

The Mankato Free Press reports the incident occurred last Saturday evening at North Ridge Park in North Mankato.

The newspaper said that police responded to a 911 call that a man was threatening people with a sharp object. Nasir Mohamed Abdalla, 18, of North Mankato was arrested.

The criminal complaint contains cites an unidentified 34-year-old coach of a teen soccer team that was playing at the field. He said Abdalla was a former team member who was kicked off in 2012. Abdalla was allowed to rejoin the team, but was again removed the week before after tried to fight an opposing player, the coach said. Abdalla arrived to play at the game Saturday and allegedly threatened the coach when he was told he couldn’t play.

The coach told police that Abdalla pulled a foot-long soccer net stake out of the ground and walked toward him while making a stabbing motion, saying he would “butcher” him. Other players pulled Abdalla away, the coach said.

Abdalla’s bail was set at $5,000. He remained in jail Wednesday.
