The first elected Somali immigrant in Minnesota said he is ready to run for mayor of Minneapolis should Mayor R.T. Rybak decide against seeking a fourth term in office, the Star Tribune reported.

Hussein Samatar made history in 2010 when he won a seat on the Minneapolis School Board, according to the Star Tribune.

Samatar is the founder and executive director of the African Development Center of Minnesota. According to the center's website, the entrepreneurial nonprofit organization "works within the African communities in Minnesota to start and sustain businesses, build wealth and promote community reinvestment."

In announcing his desire to run for Minneapolis mayor, Samatar said, "The city has never had a new American to lead" and that he thinks he would be a "formidable candidate," the Star Tribune reported.

Rybak said earlier this month that he would decide by the first of the year whether or not he will run for another term as mayor.

He denied that the decision had anything to do with rumors that he was being considered for taking over the chairman post of the Democratic National Committee.
