Sami Rahamim, the son of a Minneapolis business owner who was killed in a mass workplace shooting, will be a special guest at President Barack Obama's State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol on Feb. 12, MPR reports.

Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., announced the invitation at a forum on gun violence Thursday night in Minneapolis, where Sami Rahamim was in attendance, MPR reported.

Reuven Rahamim and five others lost their lives as the result of a workplace shooting in September at Accent Signage Systems in Minneapolis.

Sami Rahamim, a high school student, met last month with gun control advocate and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as well as relatives of victims of other mass shootings.

Obama is scheduled to be in Minneapolis on Monday to talk about gun control as he presses his case with congressional lawmakers for stricter gun measures. KSTP reports the president plans to visit the Minneapolis Police Department Special Operations Center to discuss his proposals with local leaders and law enforcement officials.

Obama faces a difficult road in Congress, where he has met with resistance in calling for stricter gun control. Critics say Obama's proposals amount to an overreaching effort to take away the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
