Spine and nerve injury to cyclist prompts MN company to recall bikes, fenders

A cyclist suffered spine and nerve damage when the fender on his bike broke – prompting the Minnesota company that sold the product to issue a recall.

Civia Cycles, which is owned by Bloomington-based Quality Bicycle Products, is recalling its Hyland bicycles equipped with those fenders, plus additional aluminum fenders sold separately.

The injury happened when the fender mounting bracket (seen at right) broke. It's the only reported incident at this point.

The product was manufactured in Taiwan, and sold at independent bike retailers across the U.S., as well as online, from April 2008 through March 2013.

About 1,000 units are affected in total.

Consumers are told to stop riding any bicycle that includes the recalled fender, and contact an authorized Civia Cycles dealer to get a $60 credit.

The bike models affected

The affected Hyland bicycles came in blue, green, olive and red. They say "Hyland" on the top tube and "Civia" on the down tube, and there's a Civia logo on the seat tube.

They sold for $1,200-$4,500.

The fenders affected

The recalled fenders are round, and designed for use with 700c wheels and tires. The Civia logo is on both the front and rear sides of each fender. Sets came in black, blue, green, olive, red and silver. An example of one is at left.

They sold for about $60 per set.
