One of the state's treasured landmarks was awarded a large preservation grant for long-term management and preservation.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Al Franken and Rep. Rick Nolan announced a $68,000 grant for the Split Rock Lighthouse awarded to the Minnesota Historical Society, which operates the lighthouse.

"Split Rock guided our ships for years, and now serves as an important landmark that draws visitors from around the country," Nolan said in the release. "Preserving this monument is critical not only to our local economy, but also to future generations who will continue to marvel at its beauty and historical importance."

The history of Split Rock

Shipwrecks from the strong 1905 November gale prompted the construction of the Split Rock Light Station, completed in 1910, the Minnesota Historical Society said.

For 59 years, the keepers at Split Rock warned ships away from the rocks and landscape of the North Shore. In 1971, the federal government designated the lighthouse to be operated as a historic site, the DNR said.

The lighthouse was restored to its 1920s appearance after it became a National Historic Landmark.

Part of its lasting prominence is the state park that surrounds the lighthouse that connects to the Superior Hiking Trail which parallels most of the Lake Superior coastline.
